This Week In Washington
On Tuesday, the House passed a continuing resolution (CR) meant to prevent a government shutdown on October 1 by extending federal funding through December 11. The measure will provide $8 billion in nutrition assistance, allow student loan guaranty agencies to continue receiving monthly maintenance fees, and extend emergency flexibilities for veterans whose education was interrupted by the pandemic. The CR now heads to the Senate where it is expected to pass.
The following bill(s) have been recently introduced for consideration by the 116th Congress (2019-2020):
S. Res. 711 – [Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY)] a resolution urging the president to cancel up to $50,000 in student loan debt for all federal student loan borrowers and waive any tax liability for the forgiven loan amount.
H.R. 8316 – [Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA-41)] would direct the Secretary of Education to provide relief to student loan borrowers for whom the Department of Education found misrepresentation by the institution of higher education or a State attorney general has asserted a right to borrower defense discharge.
