Application System Questions
How do I access the online application system?
You may access the online application system using this link. You will also find a link to the online application system in the application policy and on the AccessLex Center for Legal Education Excellence® website.
Am I required to create an account in the online application system to submit a proposal?
Yes. All applicants must create an account in the online application system in order to submit a proposal. This is a one-time registration process. If you have created an account in the past under the same email address through which you wish to apply again, you will not need to create a new account.
I previously submitted grant application materials to the online system. I am interested in submitting new materials this year. Do I need to create a new account?
No. You will not need to create a new login and password. Once logged in, please make any necessary updates to your contact information.
Eligibility and Process Questions
How do I know if my organization is eligible?
AccessLex will review grant proposals only from tax-exempt non-profit educational institutions and other nonprofit and public organizations. Faculty members, practitioners and researchers may apply for grants through their eligible affiliated organization. Please review the application policy eligibility section for the exact Internal Revenue Code tax-exempt designations.
If I am a member of a for-profit organization, am I eligible to apply for a grant?
No. AccessLex will not review proposals from for-profit organizations.
How can I find my organization’s Tax ID Number (TIN)/Employer ID Number (EIN)?
Please contact your organization’s finance office to receive your Tax ID. Your organization’s Tax ID number is a requirement for submitting an application.
Will the AccessLex Center for Legal Education Excellence accept more than one proposal from an organization or research team?
Yes. However, no duplicate proposals should be submitted for a specific research project.
If my organization submitted a proposal to another AccessLex Center for Legal Education Excellence grant program, are we eligible to submit a proposal to the Bar Success Research Grant Program?
Yes. AccessLex will consider all proposals that fit within the scope of this research grant and meet the eligibility requirements.
How many awards does the AccessLex Center for Legal Education Excellence® expect to make for the Bar Success Research Grant Program?
The number of funded proposals varies from year to year, but the process is highly competitive and only a small number of proposals are funded each year.
Program Guidelines and Priority Questions
Is there priority given to projects that have been funded in the past?
Does the project have to run for at least six months?
We seek to fund programs that take comprehensive approaches to studying the bar exam. We believe that six months is the minimum amount of time needed to undertake such research. The grant performance period includes the planning, implementation, and assessment stages of the program.
Does the research have to be completed in 24 months?
Is this grant limited to areas of study or interventions within certain stages of law school?
The Bar Success Research Grant Program funds research studying matters arising from “admission to admission” – that is, from law school admission to admission to the bar. Interventions and/or evaluations may take place prior to 1L, provided that the students in question are already admitted to the law school.
What is the difference between a project-based proposal and a research-based proposal?
Project-based proposals seek funds to implement and/or assess bar exam success interventions and programs targeted at students or graduates. Research-based proposals can take many forms, but tend to not revolve around specific bar success programs and interventions. The grant application requires applicants to classify their proposals into one of these categories. For proposals that straddle both categories, choose the option that is more reflective of the project’s scope.
My organization is interested in performing evaluations of existing interventions and/or historical data. Is this grant for us?
Yes. Certain well-designed, methodologically sound studies of data analyzing existing research projects may be appropriate for the Bar Success Research Grant.
The LOI/full proposal refers to “datasets” – the data for the research project will be generated in the first stages of the grant period. Is that acceptable, or do I need an existing dataset to apply for this grant?
Data can be preexisting or could be generated through the research for which funding is sought.
Are stipends or incentives for study participants (students, alumni, etc.) permitted as a part of the proposed budget?
The Bar Success Research Grant Program is intended to support well-designed research. Incentives or stipends may be allowed pursuant to a well-designed proposal. They should not account for a disproportionate portion of the proposal budget.
Are there any general tips for writing strong proposals?
AccessLex has compiled the following recommendations that we believe will help improve future proposal submissions for all applicants:
- Ensure that the proposed research aligns with AccessLex Institute's priority of funding research efforts to increase bar passage rates among populations most at-risk of not passing on the first attempt, as well as proposals that are designed to yield findings that are scalable and replicable.
- Write clearly and concisely.
- Anticipate readers’ concerns and address them. Provide all relevant information within the application. For example, do not simply state, “this intervention will raise bar passage to 75%”; instead explain that “this intervention will raise the bar passage rate to 75% from 62% in the previous year, which is an increase of approximately 24 students passing.”
- Review the application policy closely to ensure that the proposed project adheres to all guidelines provided in the application policy. Familiarize yourself with the deadlines.
- Conduct a final review of the application to ensure all information typed or pasted into the online application system appears accurately in the desired format and ensure that you have answered all required questions.
