Frequently Asked Questions

What is LexPostBacc?

LexPostBacc is a deferred admission program that provides law schools with a means of broadening access to legal education for promising applicants who may need additional preparation and exposure prior to starting law school. During the 2025-26 admission cycle, participating law schools will be able to offer admission, deferred to fall 2027, to applicants, conditioned on successful completion of the LexPostBacc curriculum.

How is LexPostBacc curriculum structured?

From July 2026 through May 2027, LexPostBacc Scholars will be exposed to a rigorous law school prep curriculum that will focus on building analytical and critical thinking skills as the foundations of competent legal analysis and writing. Scholars will also receive financial education. Schools may opt to require Scholars to retake the LSAT during the program cycle, with the benefit of a full-length Kaplan online LSAT course.

The curriculum will require participants to spend about 15 hours per week completing exercises, tasks, and assessments, not including LSAT prep. Learn more about the curriculum.

Who is eligible to participate in LexPostBacc?

To participate in LexPostBacc, applicants must:

  • Be referred by a participating law school
    • There is also a direct application version of LexPostBacc, learn more.
  • Have an LSAT score no higher than the 25th percentile among the national pool of test takers (as reflected on the CAS report)
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree or will receive a bachelor’s degree by August 2026
  • Have not previously enrolled in a J.D. program at an ABA-approved law school
  • Commit to enroll at the referring law school, upon successful completion of the program

The LexPostBacc eligibility requirements state that applicants cannot have LSAT scores above the 25th percentile. Is this the 25th percentile for all LSAT takers or my school’s 25th percentile?

The 25th percentile LSAT cap is based on the pool of all LSAT takers nationally. The 25th percentile score typically ranges from 144 to 146, based on the specific test administration. Any score at or below this level meets the test score criterion. A test taker’s score percentile is provided on the CAS report.

What are the eligibility requirements for law schools that want to refer applicants to LexPostBacc?

In order to refer applicants to LexPostBacc, law schools must submit an Intent to Refer Form to AccessLex by March 31, 2026.

  • On the form, each law school will indicate the number of applicants it expects to offer deferred admission and refer to the program.
  • Participating law schools will agree to:
    • Refer 2-10 applicants who meet the LexScholars eligibility requirements
    • Award a scholarship, grant, or tuition discount of at least 20% of tuition, renewable with good academic standing

How much does it cost to participate in LexPostBacc?

There are no program costs for law schools or the applicants they refer.

Can an aspiring law student apply to LexPostBacc without being referred by a law school?

Yes. Aspiring law students can apply to our LexPostBacc Direct. They should explore applying for LexPreLaw as well.

I work at a law school and am considering whether my school should participate. What are the benefits of participating in LexPostBacc?

LexPostBacc offers a pathway to law school admission for promising applicants who may have difficulty otherwise gaining admission. Program participants will be exposed to a rigorous 10-month-long law school prep curriculum premised on increasing their odds of law school success. The benefits to participating law schools include receiving advanced matriculation commitments from promising applicants who have demonstrated potential for law school success.

Referring law schools may also qualify for up to $15,000 in financial support through a LexScholars Engagement Grant. More information.

Is an applicant who accepts a deferred admission offer and participates in LexPostBacc required to attend the law school that made the offer?

Deferred admission offers made as part of LexPostBacc are binding, once accepted. Applicants will be required to sign a program participation agreement that certifies that the applicant will attend the law school that made the deferred admission offer and will not seek admission elsewhere for at least 18 months.

If an applicant accepts the deferred admission offer but does not complete LexPostBacc, is the deferred admission offer still valid?

No. Deferred admission offers made as part of LexPostBacc are conditioned on applicants successfully completing the program. Therefore, failure to complete the program invalidates the offer.

If an applicant accepts the deferred admission offer but does not demonstrate stipulated levels of proficiency during the program, is the deferred admission offer still valid?

Deferred admission offers made as part of LexPostBacc are conditioned on applicants successfully completing the program. Successful completion requires that applicants demonstrate adequate levels of proficiency during each assessment period. In cases where a Scholar does not demonstrate adequate proficiency, the referring law school will have the option of withdrawing the admission and scholarship offers or allowing the Scholar to continue in the program with the offers intact.

Can a participating law school add its own mandatory conditions to LexPostBacc admission or scholarship offers?

No. Referring law schools cannot add additional mandatory conditions to the offers made through LexPostBacc. But we encourage law schools to invite Scholars to participate in school-specific programming and activities.

Are participating law schools allowed to exceed the referral allotments they stipulated when they signed up for LexPostBacc?

Referring law schools will be allowed to exceed stipulated allotments on a space available basis. Please forward requests to exceed allotments to [email protected].

In instances where an applicant does not accept a LexPostBacc offer made to them, can that slot be awarded to another applicant?

Yes. Referring law schools may re-award program slots that are forfeited or declined. All offers must be communicated to AccessLex by May 15, 2026.

Can my law school qualify for financial assistance for recruiting and enrolling LexPostBacc Scholars?

Yes. Referring law schools may qualify for up to $15,000 in financial support through a LexScholars Engagement Grant. More information.
