Evaluating a Productive Mindset Program for the California, Colorado, and Utah Bar Exams
Program: Directed Grants Program
Grantee: Indiana University Maurer School of Law
Grant Amount: $331,438
Summary of Grant Outcomes
This grant funded the implementation of the Productive Mindset Intervention by the Equity Accelerator (Indiana University Maurer School of Law) for the California, Colorado, and Utah bar exams in July 2022 and July 2023. The Productive Mindset Intervention provides bar exam study strategies as well as targeted interventions addressing psychological friction—that is, barriers to effective bar examination preparation in the form of anxiety, fixed mindsets, and stress. The Equity Accelerator found that participants who received the treatment condition received bar examination scores approximately 18 points higher (on average) than those who did not (after controlling for LSAT scores, law school GPAs, and cohort effects). The effects were even more pronounced for first-generation students and underrepresented minority students, whose scores were 21 points higher on average.
