University of Miami - Analyzing the Relationship Between Curriculum Selections and Bar Exam Sub-Scores

Program: Bar Success Research Grant Program
Grantee: University of Miami
Grant Amount: $300,000

Summary of Grant Outcomes

This grant funded research into the relationship between taking courses in bar-tested subject areas and performance on bar preparation diagnostic materials and the bar exam. Examining data from University of Miami School of Law graduates who took the Florida bar exam for the first time in 2022–24, the study found a modest relationship between the number of MBE-tested courses taken and both MBE scaled scores and performance on simulated MBE exams. The research also found that for most MBE-tested subject areas there was no statistically significant relationship between the number of courses taken in that subject and performance in that specific subject on simulated MBE exams, although there were notable exceptions like Constitutional Law where the number of courses taken did appear to affect scores.
